Mediterranean Sea

Hello all, I am planning a trip this October to Italy and one of my girlfriends who will be traveling with us (her first time to Italy) has made a request to see the Mediterranean while we are staying in Rome. We will be in Rome for ten days so I figure a day trip is not out of the question.

Here's my question; What is a good day trip from Rome? I dont want to be on a train for hours, it would be nice if the town has some charm, sights to see, shopping, bistros and a nice beach to sit and admire the Mediterranean.

And yes I know October is not exactly the time to enjoy the Mediterranean but my friend has lost both her parents within a year of each other and she's not asked for much on this trip but for that, I would realy like to give her a day by the sea.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I was hoping that someone would provide a better answer. You can easily get to the Med within an hour train ride from Rome. A day trip to Ostia Antica is the old port city for Rome -- now inland -- then continue on to the beaches at Ostia. Second, Civitavcchia is the cruise port for Rome with the train station right on the beach. You can walk out the station, across the road, and put your toe in the Med. It is pretty ride to Civit... because the last fifteen, twenty minutes of the train ride is along the coast. Unfortunately I have no idea of shopping, bistros, along the beach areas.

Send that question to RoninRome and see what he says.

Also, see the responses under -- beaches, coast line trip -- currently about seven postings down.

I like the Ostia Antica/Ostia Lido idea. They're pretty convenient from Rome. The Ostia Lido train will take you a few blocks from the sea.
