Is there a place to find out what is legal/illegal in Italy? I take some supplements that I'd like to bring along or buy there, and I take over the counter stuff that I couldn't do without (thanks to this site, I know to bring my own Sudafed!), but no prescriptions. Should I have the doctor who told me to take the supplements write a prescription? I'll be in Italy about 5 weeks. Thanks
Are you concerned about taking supplements with you because you think either TSA or the Italians in customs are going to care? They're not.
I was thinking more about availability in Europe. I hadn't thought about Customs in Italy at all, but that's very good to know.
I know that the US is trying to make supplements and thing prescription only, and I thought that maybe similar rules are in place in Europe.
I've never had anyone check any of my medications, prescribed or over the counter. I don't think you have
anything to worry about.
I brought some of my supplements in unmarked plastic bags and no one gave a rip. If you are really concerned, bring them in their original containers. I would bring the amount you need for 5 weeks rather then try to find them here.
Thanks so much. TSA calls them food, or medicine, so that's never a problem here. I'll just pack more for this trip and save my time for fun!!!!
With regard to Sudafed, there is a wonderful medicine here called Actigrip, which I believe is quite similar in composition and effect. FYI. In case you should run out of it or whatever. It is available by request in pharmacies.
Sarah, I take a ton of supplements & just a few prescription meds but I had no problems traveling with them in '09 & I don't expect there to be any issues when I travel to Italy again this year. I put all of my supplements in little ziploc baggies & no one questioned them coming or going. I even had 20 little baggies of a white powdery fiber that I take & I was concerned that it would raise a concern but again, I had no problems!
Thanks, everyone, for your thoughtful replies!
