medication

I have seen where RS recommends having medication in its original bottles and labels. I take a LOT of prescription medicine and this would take up quite a bit of room. Have any of you ever had your medicine checked upon entering either Italy or France?

I never have. Not to say it couldn’t happen but many people report having their pills in bags or a plastic organizer. Not in the original bottles, with no checking or difficulty.

What I do is ask the pharmacy to print another label - or take it off the bottle if it’s attached in such a way that’s possible. I will either tape the labels to the baggie with the pills or just have the label in my bag.

If you take narcotic medications or something else highly regulated then I’d do the original bottle. Just in case.

My son has a liquid medicine - it’s not restricted but it is more than 3oz so I bring the original, labeled bottle so it can go through security

If you buy your Rxs in larger quanties, have your pharmacy print your labels and put them on smaller containers. Take enough of each Med to last the length of your trip + 3-4 days. Make sure you also have the generic name for each Rx med plus any OTC med you may take.

Aside from vitamins I only pack one prescription medication (always in carry-on), and I've never been questioned about it.

As you take a lot of medications, one method you might use is to pack the med's in a medication organizer such as THIS model. It's more-or-less flat so should be fairly easy to fit in with clothing without taking up too much room. Packing written copies of your prescriptions with that would also be a good idea.

I have never had anyone check my meds. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

What I have done is ask the pharmacy to give me a duplicate label for a smaller bottle or a duplicate label attached to a plastic bag. If you explain that you are traveling (and assuming you are not forced to use a mail order pharmacy), they should be more than willing to do this for you in order to take your meds abroad in smaller packaging.

I have three loose-pack prescription meds. I take long trips, but luckily those pills are all very small. I dump all three into a single prescription bottle, peel the labels off two of the original bottles, and add them to the bottle I'm taking with me. OTC vitamins and supplements are more of a problem for me because of their bulk. They go in whatever combination of bottles works, size-wise, and as the trip goes on they end up being consolidated into fewer and smaller bottles. I can only hope that no one ever takes an interest in those OTC pills.

I think using ZIP Lock bags makes a lot of sense for fairly short trips, but on lengthy vacations I think bottles are more protective against humidity and air.

I use a medication organizer and take enough with me to see me through a couple of extra days - just in case flight is delayed as happened this year. Flight was late leaving Toronto so missed my connection in Vancouver and had to spend the night there. I take the pharmacy receipts with me but have never been asked for any documentation. Another option is to have your pharmacy make up bubble packs for you. They are like file folders and the labels are stuck on the inside cover. Easy to slip in carry on baggage.

Needless to say, never, ever pack meds in checked baggage.

I've traveled to Europe 4 times over the years and no one ever questioned my medications in either the original containers or in plain plastic containers. My last trip overseas to Scotland, I used BioSwiss Travel Pill Pouch Organizers for my various medications. They're little zip-loc bags with a space to write the medication name and dosage. Found on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QLA4CT8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I found these pacs saved so much more space. I used for both over the counter and prescription meds. I took pictures of all the prescription labels just in case.

I take a few prescription meds and travel for up to three months at a time So, you can imagine, I have a lot. I've never been questioned. (Going through customs is just a walk through so I have never even been stopped. That doesn't mean you wont')

Some of my pills are big so the bottles are huge. I put those in a ziploc bag. I have the pharmacy print out all of the labels and I put them on a piece of paper so they are all in one place.

I'm also going to assume that since I am older and retired they would expect someone my age to take some meds. If I was in my 20's, I'd probably keep them in the original container.
