Medical travel insurance

I am looking at the Geo Blue trekker essential medical plan. It covers $500,000 emergency medical/per person and $250,000 emergency medical transportation. Is this enough coverage? Thanks for your thoughts!

Possibly...it depends on the person's pre-existing conditions as to whether the med-evac amount would be enough.

I usually have $500,000 evac for no particular reason. In Covid I bumped it up to 1 million in case I had to be flown home on a ventilator. I've decreased it now back to $500,000.

One never knows. It's all a guess. We used GeoBlue last year in France; with an urgent care situation, which cost about 100 euro total-doctor, facility and pharmacy. We submitted the claims using the receipts we received once we got home and were quickly reimbursed. Did the policy cost more than our expenses? Yes. But we really buy the policy for what you are thinking about an extreme emergency situation. I usually go for coverage about what you are considering. Oh and I marveled at the reasonable cost for care compared to at home in the US.

It is sort of like homeowner's insurance on your home....maybe you will only have a roof leak....but, a tornado could wipe the entire place off the earth. So, depends on what your risk tolerance is and what other resources you might have to pay for an extreme situation....or just a serious situation.

When we were planning our last journey (an extensive, multi-continent trip), the young man who was working with us at the provider (by phone) was incredibly competent, experienced, and kind. Then, a few weeks into the planning, another person was taking his place....we asked. He had gone to a close-by country and was doing moderate dives into waves with other young guys. I do not recall all the details, but he was seriously injured (I think to the extent he could barely move and could not walk..........weeks in a hospital out of the country. Family (at home) was trying to figure how to get him home to a local hospital. Now well over two years later, I just recently (when I was inquiring about a trip for someone else), I learned he has not back at work. Do not know all the details...I do not need to know...but I am guessing it was extremely expensive.

My guess is that since he and his buddies had just gone (for I think it was a quick weekend trip or such), they might not have each purchased trip insurance, muchless medical evacuation coverage.

Things happen. Plan for the worst when you are traveling....or just have the resources to cover the $ for care and transport.

Travel Guard and Geo Blue is what we have used.

My annual GeoBlue policy just expired. As an annual policy, it was $100,000 coverage with $10,000 deductible. I bought it because there was no pre-existing clause. Annual policies had less coverage (could have also been age related). Fortunately I did not have to file a claim. I "survived" two falls on wet cobblestones without so much as a bruise so had no claim to file. I buy an annual MedJet policy for evacuation. The phone rep for GeoBlue when I bought the policy was critical of their evac coverage, too many escape clauses. Don't know if that's true but I wasn't going to risk it, especially when MedJet will get me home.

Hi there, I also carry the Geo Blue Trekker medical plan, with the same coverage. Not sure how much is enough, but for a few hundred $$, this gives me reassurance. As I understand it, the emergency medical transport is NOT back to your town of choice, it's to the nearest hospital with facilities that can handle the condition. So I've added Medjet, which is from a hospital whereever you are, to a home country hospital of your choice, but do read the details. It's on THEIR jet, not any commercial airliner. Good luck, read the fine print is my main suggestion!
