Medical insurance for International Travel

We will be traveling thru Italy and Croatia in April and May and are interested in getting medical insurance. Has anyone had an experience with any companies they could recommend.

I’ve used AIG, Generali, Allianz, Travelex. Didn’t have to file medical claims but they are all highly rated. I heard Faye is a top rated one too, but never used.
Check your available options here. Don’t skimp on insurance. It is not expensive. Actually what drive costs is the cost of the trip if you want to cover cancellations, but the medical portion is less impacting on the premium costs.

Remember that evacuation insurance can be separate from medical insurance.

Some credit cards offer evacuation policies but to be safe, METJETASSIST.com might be worth taking a look at. For an annual fee, they promise to evacuate you not to the nearest hospital, as most policies would do, but to a hospital in your home country and city.

To me that might be just as, or more, important than coverage of the care received overseas. You might want both.

We were very happy with Allianz the one time we needed it; I broke an elbow and needed surgery and hospitalization; they paid the hospital directly and then re-imbursed the follow up care in Paris including orthopedic consult and physical therapy. Saved my 10 week trip (and them some money from not needing to cover my flight home)

Lots of US health policies cover medical care abroad. When we had that kind of coverage we carried a medical evacuation policy as that can be a really expensive event.

I've purchased several policies from Trawick International. They offer both traditional trip cancellation policies as well as medical only, and offer the ability to customize the coverage to your needs. I've found the premiums to be reasonable. I've never filed a claim, so can't advise on that aspect.
