We are trying to decide whether to go to Italy in May or June. Are the crowds significantly smaller in May (enough for it to be a factor)? Is it much cheaper in May(enough to be a fctor)?
May is absolutely preferred over June. No crowds and alot cooler!!! Your airfare will also be alot less. I have traveled to Europein many diff months and my favorites are May first and Fall second.

We went from May 13-19 this year. It was a little warmer than it normally was per the locals but not high humidity. The roses were blooming all over when we were there and everything was very green. It was beautiful. Most likely not that way in the summer when it is so hot. When I looked at booking on airlines I put in both May and June. June always came in more expensive. The major tourist attractions were busy but not elbow to elbow, and the only place that city buses were crowded was Rome so we took the subway everywhere. I was concerned also about too much rain but we only had one rain shower in the two weeks we were there.

Excuse me, we went the 13th through the 29th.
We traveled in May (the 7th -17th)and even though it was crowded (more so than when we went last year in Feb.)it wasn't awful. We didn't have to wait to get a table at restaurants and always had a seat on the trains. Our airfare was cheaper (the rates seem to go up after the 21st, or definitely around Memorial day) but your hotel won't be. Most places consider May high season. And it was warm enough in May that I would think June could be too warm. We ended our trip in Rome and it was really warm in Rome - and we're from Georgia.
May will be fewer crowds and cooler. I would much prefer May.
It may not be as much cheaper as other parts of Europe because Italy has a longer "high" season, May to Sept, than North of the Alps, June to August.
When I checked in to Civita B&B in Civita di Bagnoregio in early June, the owner said, "You just missed Rick Steves by a month. He was standing right her a month ago!" He said Rick comes to visit Italy in early May because it's cooler and less crowded.
Indeed, we spent late May and early June in Italy this year and were miserably hot a few times. It's not bad if you're just sitting and taking it easy, but if you're out walking the streets, sightseeing, the heat can really wear you down.
I'll never again go to Italy in June, July, August, or September!
