May 5 train strike intel?

Hi Folks,
For anyone caught up in yesterday's train strike trying to get to the Cinque Terre from Florence, I was hoping you could share what happened with your trains and how you managed your travel. I've got accommodations in Monterosso on 5/19, so trying to figure out my action plan. Tx.

We are arriving on an overnight flight from the US into Milan on May 19th so I am curious too. Does anyone know if the Malpensa Express from the airport to Milano Centralle ran or not? Since both the 5th and the 19th are Sundays it would appear to be very uncertain.

In our experience, it was a big fake out. We had reservations on Trenitalia to travel from Rome to Bologna on May 5. We checked the train status a couple of times in advance, and the ticket agent told us they couldn't tell if our trains would be cancelled until about an hour before departure. However, they told us we could cancel our reservations in order to get a "guaranteed" train - as long as we paid the difference. As far as we could tell, there were actually only a few trains cancelled, and ours wasn't one of them. Depending on your appetite for risk, I would just wait until an hour before your train departure, or else you might get the "scared tourist" markup.

On May 5th we took a car service( 7 adults) from Florence to La Spezia because of our strike concerns. Trains were running from La Spezia thru the 5 towns. We caught the train for Vernazza and hiked to Monterosso. Ran into trouble with the trains back to Vernazza . Specifically they cancelled the trains from around 8 pm until 10:30pm. That’s our story. We had a fantastic 2 night stay. Trains ran fine on Monday.
