I am traveling with a group May 13-22 (Bellagio then Venice) and want to expand my trip on one side or the other. I am leaning toward staying after, as it works better for my job and will get acclimated with the group before setting off on my own... but are there weather or crowd concerns in either week? I want to go to Cinque Terre and Tuscany.

Either would be fine. But if after meshes with your job, do it then.
The crowds will come in June.

You can't predict the weather, but I usually go in May and it is decent. It might be more relaxing for you to go at the end since you will be alone, and you will be used to Italy by then.

End of May is more likely to have better weather. April/May sometimes has a higher chance of being rainy. Crowds might actually be bigger earlier in the big art cities. Lots of school trips take place in Spring. However not so much at the end of May when it's time to be back for the final exams. At beach locations it doesn't get crowded until later, except for maybe on weekends.
