May 19th National Train Strike

It looks like there is a national train strike may 19th from 3:00 am - 2:00 am on may 20th if I am reading it correctly. (Italy uses military time I believe) We land in Rome on 5/19 at 7:55 am and are scheduled on trentatalia 11:57 train to La spieza. From what I am reading about a strike on a Sunday - we will have NO options to get to La Spieza by train.

Any advice would be appreciated.

There will most likely be changing news on this, so you'll want to keep tabs on things.

Most likely a certain # of trains will be guaranteed to run, which ones will depend
on time and route.

The strikes are on Trenitalia and Trenord, which I assume are national operators.
Regional lines therefore might not be affected and offer options.

Someone else will know more, but if you find a train that is operating, your existing
ticket will be sufficient for passage on that train.

I wonder if we should try to change trains to Italo train since that doesn't look like it is on strike

I also have train pickets booked on this date through Trenitalia. I decided to book additional tickets with Italio and booked flex tickets in case the strike is cancelled I can get a refund (less 20%)
I thought I would rather pay the 20% fee to guarantee seats. If the strike goes ahead I can get a refund in the cancelled train.

Are you going to La Spieza on 5/19? I think it looks like we are on a frecca train so if I understand correctly that the fast train on not affected by the strike historically.

Frecciarossa train #8620 (departs Roma Termini 13:57 pm with final destination Milano Centrale) stops at La Spezia Centrale at 17:46 pm and is on the posted list of trains guaranteed in the event of a strike (list valid through early June)

Your booked train, Frecciarossa #8616 is not one of the guaranteed trains. I guess it depends how lucky you feel, but if it were me I’d change my ticket to the guaranteed train if seats are available.

We encountered a similar strike on Sunday May 5 and while more trains seemed to be running than just the guaranteed ones, we were happy for the peace of mind of having booked a guaranteed train.

Thanks - the milan train is sold out :(
Working now to see if we can get an italiatreno to florence and the private ride to La Spieza - so if anyone has a private ride contact that is apprecaiated.

We arrive in Milan on the 19th, which is a Sunday, just as May 5th was. Trenord runs the Malpensa Express from the airport to Milan. Does anyone know if it will operate on the 19th?

Trenitalia’s guaranteed Frecciabianca train 8620 is still showing seats available for Roma Termini to La Spezia on May 19 — I tried a dummy booking for 4 passengers on the Trenitalia app just now. Good luck!

Not sure, but maybe someone else on the forum will chime in.

I just did an omline chat with Trenitalia who (after waiting a long while) said my train is not cancelled on Sunday from Milan to Venice. I did buy another refundable ticket from Italo yesterday, and as I’m not 100% confident in whether my train will be cancelled I’ll wait till we land in Milan and see if I can check on Friday of the status of the Sunday trains.
Does anyone know if I have the flex ticket how long I have to get a refund before the train departs?

No my train FR9717 is not on that list but I have read (not sure how correct) that they will run some trains. It’s very confusing. I’m hoping that I can get more info from the actual station in Milan on Friday. If not the additional back up tickets I bought that train leaves at 9.35am and the original FR9717 train at 9.45am - I’m hoping we will know at the very latest by Sunday morning lol

Italo now has a banner on their site mentioning the strike. Check their guaranteed list of trains there. Many are not running.

Thank you. Hopefully Trenitalia will post a comment about it as well. Fingers crossed - we booked on the 8620 which is on the list from a previous poster of trains that run.
Thanks for all the advice!

Thanks very much for the response, isn31c. Our flight (from NY) lands at 6:30 AM. We won't have checked luggage but the last morning train to Centrale at 7:37 looks pretty iffy. I guess our options to get into Milan will likely be bus or taxi. Is there still hope it may be called off? I am grateful that we didn't book an onward journey that day at least.
