We will be in Rome on May 1. Does anyone know of any special events or closures on that day? We have emailed the tourist office and they tell us that in the past, Pompeii, the ruins, are open and cost €1 admission. This could be a possibility.
We have thought also of going to the beach that day. We would love to have some suggestions. We are travelling with our 11 year old grandson. Thanks to everyone. Jennifer
I'm sorry that I'm not offering an answer to your question, but we too are concerned about train schedules on May 1st. We will be traveling from Colmar, France to Varenna, Italy. Are there less trains running on holidays in Italy?
Every year May 1st in Rome there's a huge, all day and night concert in San Giovanni square It is sponsored by labour parties and workers trade unions If you love music, that's a good place to be...but consider that this may affect town traffic... here the italian wikipedia page http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concerto_del_Primo_Maggio here you can find all info on Rome Events

Jennifer, the trains will operate but they will be on their holiday or "festival" schedule. You can check the Trenitalia site to see your more limited options. The trains will stick pretty close to their schedules. Our experiences on May 1 are more concerning when using the local bus systems. They too are on their "holiday" schedule, but early in the AM, it seems they are ALL on holiday. After a couple frustrating years in Rome, we learned to stay close to home on May 1 - or ride our motorino. So if you're planning a beach trip, I'd contact your accommodations for details specific to your location.
We will also be in Italy on May 1, and have been wondering the same thing. I have been warned by Italian friends that everyone tries to go to the beach on that holiday, and that we would be wise to avoid the Cinque Terre and stay inland.
We will be in Florence on that date, and I am wondering if lots of things will be closed. Good luck!
