We will be traveling to Pompei and Naples after our stay in Matera. Has anyone done this by bus or train? It's really confusing to get the correct information.:We prefer to go to Pompei first, but will make our way there via salerno or Naples if that is the only option.

The train is not a good option.
You can take a bus.
If you want, you can take a direct bus with no changes required in Salerno (or Naples).
A bus company based in Matera called Busmiccolis (https://www.busmiccolis.it/en/) has two direct runs a day from Matera to Pompeii, at 8:35am and at 5:15pm. The journey is 3h45m long.
If that doesn't work, I'm sure there are buses with Flixbus or MarinoBus that go to Salerno or Naples, then from there you can take a train or bus to Pompeii.
