We'll be ending a bike trip Oct. 11th in Matera and need to get to Sorrento. Any suggestions on the best way? Thanks!

There are not trains in Matera proper. The best solution is to rent a car and return it after you end your Sorrento stay (another place where you will make good use of a car).

Go to the Europe forum at Fodor's and type Matera in the search box; you will get some info. We may be doing the same thing in the other direction.

Take the Marino Autolinee bus (too early for October schedules) from Matera to Naples and the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento.
