What would be the best way to get from Matera to Salerno? Seems train route is scarce. Bus?
There are maybe 2 trains a day.
This bus will get you between the towns.
Trenitalia also seems to operate a daily bus, taking approx 3 hours.
The bus service is offered by Trenitalia as Freccialink. It goes from Matera to Salerno, but it can only be bought in combination with a Frecce train, which goes to Napoli Centrale. The journey takes just under 4 hours.

We had tickets for this journey in March 2022, but of course we did not make that trip.
To find the route on Trenitalia and buy tickets, use “Matera” as the start point and Napoli Centrale as the end.
