We are traveling without a car. We need to get from Matera to Catania. I have not had much luck with train schedules and I cannot find any bus schedules in English. I would appreciate any transport information.
Matera is NOT served by Trenitalia (Ferrovie dello Stato, Italian National Railways). It is served by a regional rail line (Ferrovie Apulo-Lucane) to BARI. This might help: www.sassiweb.com www.marinobus.it www.fal-srl.it www.aeroportidipuglia.it (Bari airport) www.gesac.it (Naples airport) www.tttlines.it (Overnight car ferry Naples-Catania) www.ferroviedellostato.it (Trenitalia trains) You could take Marino Bus to NAPLES, then fly to CTA from NAP (nonstop, on Air One (Alitalia) or Air Italy). Or take the overnight car ferry from Naples to Catania. Or take the daylight IC train from Naples to Catania. Or you could take the FAL train to BARI, then fly from Bari to Catania (via Roma-FCO, on Alitalia). Excerpt from www.sassiweb.com By train – FAL (Ferrovie Apulo-Lucane) shuttle buses from Ferrandina Scalo station to Matera (35 Km). FAL buses or trains from Bari station to Matera (60 Km). By bus – Due to the absence of national railways, bus companies propose an [INVALID]nate solution. Marino connects Matera to Milan, Ancona, Bologna, Chianciano, Fiuggi, Naples, Novara, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Sassuolo, Urbino as well as to other foreign cities. Marozzi and Liscio propose links to Rome, Florence, Pisa and Siena with both day and night departures. By car – From the adriatic coast: take the motorway Bologna-Taranto down to Bari Nord. Follow the indications Altamura-Matera on road SS 99. From the tyrrhenian coast: take the Salerno - Reggio Calabria motorway and leave at the exit of Sicignano degli Alburni. Go on up to Potenza, and then up to Metaponto along road SS 407 Basentana until indications for Matera can be viewed. By plane - Bari-Palese Airport (approx. 60 Km).
Here is a viable plan: Depart Matera 6:20 a.m. MARINOBUS: 19 Euros. Arrive Napoli (Stazione Centrale) 10:30 a.m. NOTE: This bus transits through Altamura and Bari. WALK inside train station. Depart Napoli Centrale 13:42 Intercity (IC) train: 42 Euros. Arrive Catania Centrale 21:13. Too long a day? When you arrive by bus at Napoli Piazza Garibaldi, take the ALIBUS to NAP Airport, then board the Alitalia flight at 14:30 to CTA (75 Euros).
