Hi: In August, we will be staying in Matera for 2 nights and then have 3 more nights before we fly from Naples to Vienna. We are looking for a place to stay on the Amalfi coast that is near a beach and restaurants (we will not have a car on the Coast). I have also heard that to be safe, one should stay in Naples the night before a flight because of traffic concerns. Our flight is on the earlier side (9:50 in the morning). Does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay on the Amalfi Coast? This has been a hard trip to plan because I hear of the crowds on the Amalfi Coast, but it looks so beautiful, I would love to experience it.

You could stay in Salerno, which is a small city and not a tiny village but does have ferry service to the villages. There is a direct airport bus. Ferries: https://www.travelmar.it/en/index
If you don't mind the early wake up, then one of the mainland end villages would probably be okay--Cetara, Minori, Maiori, though in that case you might consider booking a private driver to the airport.
I don't think I would stay in Amalfi or Positano when needing to get to the airport in morning (and I prefer the more low key villages anyway). I cannot speak to what August will be like!

i was there in early November 2024 so yeh not August but fabulous weather and crowded but not packed. Stayed in Amalfi at Hotel Fortuna right at the town center and a few feet from the bus parking lot. No way you could get to Naples for a 9:50 flight so yes, stay overnight at the airport if you are going to stay anywhere.
