Matera, Italy Hotel, Inn or B&B

We are planning a trip to the area in September, 2018 and would appreciate any recommendations for a family of 6 adults.

On an RS trip we stayed in the Hotel Sassi - it was amazing !!!

I would recommend the location and ambiance.

We enjoyed Locanda di San Martino, an amazing cave hotel in the heart of the Sassi district, with a wonderful underground thermal spa. Our room had a king-size bed on the main level and a sleeping loft upstairs with 2 twin beds which we didn’t use but may work for your family.

I second the Locanda di San Martino. Lovely rooms and views but the Spa area was the winner for me. Great place to relax after a day of climbing many, many steps exploring the Sassi. Swimming there was magical.

This past September, 2017 we spent four nights in the terrific Palazzo Degli Abati located inside the Sassi. This place was gorgeous, extremely clean, and the staff is first rate. Our room was part cave, part kitchen from the former abbey, and the shower was the former chimney.

IMHO, make sure you stay in the Sassi because it's unlike anything we've seen before.

Buon viaggio,

I found Donna Eleonora Residence (www.donnaeleonora.net) to be perfect for our visit to Matera. It is a B&B right at the edge of the Sassi. It is actually a flat consisting of 3 apartments and a common area. Modern, clean, and friendly, helpful proprietors. Our room slept two and had an en suite bathroom. Not sure about the other units, but you could enquire. Reasonably priced.

Truthfully, after visiting a bunch of different cave dwellings and churches and eating in restaurants set inside caves, I was happy to return to our more modern and spacious B&B. I found the cave dwellings and restaurants to be stuffy and close, but maybe the more upscale cave hotels have a way of dealing with this.

We spent two nights at la dolce vita B&B in Matera. We were a couple, but the B&B has three rooms, and that might work for you. Great B&B.
