We will be four people driving by car to Matera for one night this June . I would like advice on what to see and do in one full day. Also, should it be by way of a guided tour. Is it possibly better to do half the day by an organized tour and the rest on your own? Any help or tips would be really appreciated. Thanks!
We took a half day guided tour, and that is what I recommend to you. Most (all?) of what you will want to see is in the Sassi, but a knowledgeable guide will give you a much better understanding of what you are seeing than you can achieve on your own. A guide will also walk you through the sights in an efficient way. We used a very good and reasonably priced person. If your are interested, I can try to dig out her contact information.
Thank you for your reply. It would be great to know who you used. If it is too difficult to find, I understand completely. I appreciate your help!
Hi Frank,
Our guide was Nadia Garlatti. However, when I tried to find her website or email, there were no reviews on TA or Fodors more recent than 2012. Maybe she has retired. 🙁

We had a great tour with Antonio in 2015. He and his wife offer several options, but I agree an overview of the sassi is helpful and enjoyable. Otherwise, Matera is just a great place to wander and explore.
Use your car to drive over to the park across the gorge. With a tour, you can enter the cave churches if you wish.
