Matera and Grotte dell' Angelo?

We're going to Matera soon - does anyone have any tips on what not to miss there? Should we hire a guide?

Also, has anyone been to Grotte dell Angelo? It looks great but I cant find much English info on it. Is it worth a visit?

See DiDi's question of 9/15 and the responses there concerning Matera. I checked my four southern Italy guidebooks and couldn't find Grotte dell Angelo listed at all.

Thanks Janet, not sure how I missed that post when I searched on Matera. It looks like good info.

I stayed in Matera on a Rick Steves trip. I was blown away by Matera !! Fabulous.
We stayed the the Hotel Sassi and our room was actually a cave cut into the Sassi stone.
Perfect location too.
