Hello:

Looking for recommendations for places to stay for 2 nights in Matera. Thanks!

November 2013 we stayed for two nights in a nice cave at the B&B La Corte dei Pastori near the church of San Pietro Caveoso. Kind of a long time ago, but recent reviews still match what we experienced.

Here’s my details about my lodging last May in Matera:

I chose my dates for Matera based on the availability of a special B&B, Palazzo Degli Abati. While I was on the fence about coming to this city, this B&B was definitely the tipping point. Being there, it was absolutely perfect! I reserved directly with them, selecting the Junior Suite in Grotta - Senza Nidd. I slept in a cave! ; ) I liked that the historical story of the Senza Nidd family who lived in my room was shared when I arrived, along with a nice explanation of how to navigate the city in an easy manner. (I only needed to pull out Google maps once while spending the afternoon out walking.) My cave room was tastefully decorated & comfortable and didn’t feel claustrophobic. The private lounging area outside my door was lovely, too. Above my room their breakfast area/tiny restaurant provided a stellar ledge viewpoint experience!

Michele,

The RS tour I took stayed at Hotel Sassi - https://hotelsassi.it/ . I found the "cave room" very comfortable, the breakfast was good, and there were great views from the hotel.

We used to stay at LOCANDA SAN MARTINO...excellent

The other. hotel I know is this one, but it is expensive:

I think that the bar for hotels and B&Bs is very high in Matera. It's one of those rare destinations where it's difficult to go too far wrong because there are so very many excellent properties at all price levels.

One major factor in deciding is whether or not you want to stay in a "cave room." I think that's where many of the negative reviews for hotels come in---some visitors find the caves to be dark and damp. (I did not find this where we stayed).

One major factor with cave rooms, no matter which hotel you choose, is that often the lighting is dim and there are not efficient bedside lamps that are powerful enough for reading in bed. (Maybe this is to an issue now since so many are reading on screens, and not actual books!!). We are booked for two nights in May and I plan to write to the hotel in advance and ask if they can put a reading lamp in our "cave."

And in some hotels, like the SAN MARTINO and many others, there are lots of steps, since the cave rooms are kind of stacked, one on top of the other.... So look at this if you have problems with steps, or uneven surfaces.

I’ll second Nancys8 nomination for La Corte dei Pastori. We stayed there for two nights in early June, 2023, and enjoyed our cave room, with a private terrace with a beautiful view of the valley.
