Massa Lubrense

On my last trip to Italy in 2023, I briefly went to Massa Lubrense from Sorrento. We went there to take a farm tour, and a small bus picked us up in Sorrento so we didn't have to arrange transportation. But we didn't get a proper look at the town on that short visit.

We're going back in September, and the accommodation are much cheaper in Massa Lubrense so I have booked an Airbnb there.

We're NOT renting a car, so planning to arrive in Naples (stay a couple of days) then take a ferry to Sorrento, and then a private transfer to Massa Lubrense. I understand there is a bus connection, but it sounds a little too much to navigate that with all our luggage. However, for coming back to Sorrento for a day trip, we'd take the bus.

If anyone has stayed in this town I'd like some intel. I think our Airbnb is right on the beach (down some very steep steps, from the photos!) but "five minutes by car" from the city center. So it was a trade off from the seaside versus the downtown. I think I understand that you can easily get a ferry to Capri and Amalfi Coast. I do NOT do well driving on winding roads, so I prefer the ferry to get around as much as possible.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Stella, some addition information may be helpful, such as EXACTLY where your accommodation is located, and how much day tripping you intend to do? That aside, I guess my first concern would be the choice of location with no ferry services if that's your preferred method of transport, and especially so if you intend to spend that majority of time day-tripping. just curious; how are you intending to to get to your Airbnb to begin with, and where do you need to be after your stay?

As well would be how many restaurants would be close by for evening meals or, say, markets if you're planning on making meals at your Airbnb?

While understanding that accommodations may be less pricey in ML, you may be trading price for convenience. Understand as well that ferries aren't necessarily a 'budget' method of travel, depending on where you want to go. For instance, from Sorrento to Capri can run nearly $30 pp one way during high season. For my troubled stomach, they were worth every cent as I never could have handled road transport but something to be aware of if budget is of concern.

That aside, yes, ferries do travel to/from Sorrento and to various locations around the Amalfi coast, including Capri, during the warmer months. They also travel to/from some of them to/from Naples, and serve some locations more frequently than others.

Well as you probably know, Airbnb hosts don't give out the EXACT address until shortly before you arrive. However, from the photos and her description this is right on the beach near Marina della Lobra. She explained that it is only a short walk down the beach to the ferry. As I explained in my original post, we plan to get to the Airbnb by private transfer from Sorrento.

The host said there are three restaurants nearby for which she would arrange transportation for us. She didn't say how far the grocery stores would be, but said that if we gave her a list of what we wanted, she'd stock us up on some essentials before we got there.

Oh gosh, yes, you mentioned how you were getting there in your original post. Sorry I missed it; I obviously need more coffee! :O)

You know, the issue with not knowing exactly where an accommodation is located is one of several reasons we don't book Airbnbs- I like to do virtual google-map walks/drives of what's nearby before reserving - but I know we're probably in the minority.

Well, Massa Lubrense technically goes as far as Sant Agata Sui Dui Golfi, which is waaaay up on the hill between Sorrento and the AC. That town is reached by bus from the Sorrento train station plaza.

It is not at all clear to me that there is a scheduled ferry in Massa Lubrense:

(I have been to Sant' Agata, but never to the coastal part of Massa Lubrense.)

Yes, there is ferry service from Marina della Lobra, which the host explained is about a ten minute walk down the beach from the Airbnb. All the reviews for this property mentioned the same thing, that they were able to easily walk to the marina for ferry service to Capri and Amalfi Coast. I chose the property specifically for that reason!

I agree, Tim. The info in your link is for tours, not scheduled ferry services around the region. They'd need to go to Sorrento for that. Stella, the link you provided states the same: it's for tours and not scheduled ferry services; there's sort of a big difference, IMHO. The tours are fine if they work for you but they're not the ferries/jetboats that are the public form of area transport via sea.

Whether it's a "tour" or a ferry service, we could still get to Sorrento from the Marina. And a tour sounds fine to me for going to Capri, Positano and the Amalfi Coast. In fact, I chose this property for that very reason, because we could easily get a tour from there. Probably less crowded than getting a tour from Sorrento which I did last time I was there.

Here's the tourism website for Massa Lubrense. As published, ferry services it lists are from Sorrento, Naples, Amalfi, Positano and Capri. Again, while there may be tours via boat from ML, it is not serviced by regional ferries.

As well, if you look at the dropdown for ferry services from Sorrento, ML isn't on the list.

Again, if the tours work for you then go for it! It's just best to know the difference between those and the ferries Tim and I are talking about, OK? Enjoy your trip!
PS: Got that needed cup of coffee!

I want to add that I'm looking for input from anyone who has spent some time in Massa Lubrense, because I want to get a little intel on the town and the lay of the land, so to speak. Of course I've looked on Google Earth, but I'd like some personal experiences.

On my one short visit there, we did a small (ten person) tour of a family farm - Mom and dad and their two sons who raise small livestock, grow herbs and vegetables, have lemon and olive groves, and produce most of their own food right there on the farm. At the end of the tour, they served an al fresco meal complete with their homemade limoncello. It was one of the best things I did in Italy! I plan to go back there again this trip, I am traveling with a different person this time who hasn't been there yet.

Yes, there seems to be a little confusion here! We are planning five days in the area and chose Massa Lubrense because it is less expensive, and little off the beaten path - not as crowded and bustling as Sorrento, where I've stayed before. The Marina website says it offers "excursions" to Capri, Positano, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast and I take that to mean that the boat takes you there, gives you a few hours to explore, and brings you back again. That is 100% what I'm looking for. (Yes, I don't need a "tour" to Sorrento if I can get there by bus in 20 minutes, but if the price is right, I might still do that because the boat trip would be more scenic.)

PS...I also chose Massa Lubrense because my g-g-grandfather is from there!

Yep, the confusion was this from your opening post:

I think I understand that you can easily get a ferry to Capri and
Amalfi Coast.

I prefer the ferry to get around as much as possible.

Just wanted to clarify that "ferry", as most of us familiar with the coast know them, isn't a form of transport to/from ML. Might be a useful thing to know for anyone else using this thread for planning their own trips. Now that we've cleared that up, carry on....

Yes, it is the word ferry versus tour that is the confusion. However, I don't know whether there are private transfers - like a "ferry" service - at this Marina. There might very well be private operators who will "ferry" you over to Sorrento for 20 euros or something like that, I really don't know. I do know you can rent small boats there, so possibly you can also arrange a water taxi service as well.

Anyway, since there don't seem to be a lot of people so far who know much about Massa Lubrense, I'll definitely come back and tell all about it after my trip. All the reviews on the Airbnb were raving about how great it is, and how easy to get to the Marina for tours/excursions. If it turns out as well as I hope, then maybe that information will help someone else.

I went to Massa only to eat lunch at a particular restaurant in the fraccione of Annunziata that I found (I think) in the SlowFood guide.
It was excellent and if you do end up staying there, I'd recommend. The food was wonderful and the immediate area did not the any obvious tourists wandering about..... I always wondered about returning to stay around there...will be interested to read of what you decide.
