Mass in Florence

Hi everyone,

We will be staying at the Hotel Minerva across from Santa Maria Novella. I searched for and found an old thread about this, but it was about Easter Mass.

Has anyone attended Saturday night vigil or Sunday AM mass at Santa Maria Novella? Trying to figure out if it is as easy as walking in if you are not a parishioner considering the cover fee and ticket required. Or is there a special mass that is off the beaten path that someone would recommend for a devout Catholic? Thanks in advance.

Hi Kevin, here is the link to the Santa Maria Novella parish website, showing the Mass hours:

I have attended Mass at a number of churches in Italy without any problem. I always dress a little better so the usher understands that I’m there “per prieghere”, not a tourist trying to sneak in.

There is no cover charge to pray, leave any viewing activities til after the service, of course. I also learned the Our Father in Italian and a few of the responses, particularly the sign of peace, to participate more fully.

Others may chime in with English language masses at other parishes, should you prefer.

Barbara - thank you so much. We anticipate an Italian (or Latin) mass. We've had the pleasure of French services in both Montreal on Easter and Notre Dame on NYE.

Is there a particular mass that you've enjoyed in Florence? Thank you again.

We've attended (Christmas Eve) Midnight Mass at The Duomo, Santa Maria del Fiore. Afterwards (01:30), folks lingered and visited in the piazza 'til the wee hours. Would recommend to anyone visiting Florence around the holidays.

On Easter day the Mass at the Duomo would have the added benefit of the 'Scoppio del Carro' (pandemics permitting)
