I was told that I need to get a ticket for Mass from my local Parrish.. I went there and they did not know what I was talking about?/ Does anyone know the website for the Vatican? Is Wed the only day I can see His Holiness?? Michelle Campbell Valrico FL
I've been to Rome many times and only needed a ticket for a Mass at Easter. All of the other times, I just walked in for Mass. One year on Palm Sunday, I just walked over for Mass and the Pope officiated! Quite special. The Easter Mass was requested through St. Susanna as previous poster described, but had to verify I was a member of a parish.
This site is specifically about the Papal Audiences, which it seems is what you want. Click the 'View More' link to the right of the small picture in the middle of the page to learn about how to get free tickets. http://www.papalaudience.org/ To attend a Mass conducted by the Pope: http://www.papalaudience.org/papal-mass
Suggest you go to www.santasusanna.org and they have the information you are looking for. It is the website of the Catholic church for Americans in Rome. The tickets for the general audience are free and you pick them up in Rome, however, not sure what the process is for a Papal Mass.
When are you going? The Pope is usually out of the Vatican during the summer (but of course, who knows what Pope Francis will do!). On Sunday, you can pretty much just walk in - no ticket required. If you are in Rome on Sunday, July 14th Mass at 10 (or is is 10:30?) will be a special celebration for the 500th anniversary of the papal choir. I've seen the repertory and can tell you that this will be very special!!!!
The latest news I've seen/heard is that Pope Francis will not spend the summer at Castel Gandolfo, as his predecessor did, but will make a trip there to recite the Angelus with the pilgrims and visitors on July 14 - which is interesting considering the event mentioned in the above reply is on the same date. But the new Pope is full of surprises, so verify, verify, verify. The Vatican posts important dates in his public calendar here: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/francesco/calendar/papa-francesco_calendario_en.html
I will be in Rome in September.. when can I go to Mass in St Peters?? Michelle Campbell
From your last question, are you OK if the Pope isn't presiding? If so, there are multiple Masses each day at St Peters. I believe you can check the schedule at Vatican website, Vatican.va. Early in the morning, at opening time, multiple priests will be in line to say Mass at various side altars; you can find Mass in most languages by just wandering by the altars. Early morning is a wonderful, and quiet time to see the basilica. There is a large Mass late in each day (around 5, I seem to remember) at the Altar of the Chair (ie, the large altar at the far end, under the Bernini dove window). There are also Masses through the day at the large chapel to the left of the Altar of the Chair; I'm not certain of the name, but it may be the chapel of St Joseph. Guards will be posted outside these chapels as the time of Mass approaches... to ensure that those entering are entering for prayer/Mass. Ask one of them.
