I need the name and location of the mask making business in Venice.
A "please" would be nice.... ;) Do you realize that questions on this board are answered by volunteer participants and not by Rick Steves or his staff? My inference is because of the tone and specificity of this question and the other you posted about "the" guide on the 2010 tour. There are dozens of mask makers in Venice. Are you looking for a specific one? A Google search (Venice mask store) yields many candidates.
That's like asking for the address of the Starbucks downtown.
If I were to offer a choice, right on the Rialto bridge, not quite to the top of the crest, a guy has a shop of masks that he makes by hand of good quality, but fairly priced.
They are almost everywhere. I went in many and each had so many unique designs as well as some masks that looked 'generic'. Are you looking for a specific store?
I was told that there were only 2 shops left that make authentic venetian masks. I bought a bunch from a workshop and gallery called mondonovo. There are 3 locations in Venice. They claim they are the mask makers of the masks used in "Eyes Wide Shut" but I bet the other mask maker states the same thing!
you may find that many are made in China. You're welcome.
I believe you can change that "many" to "almost all", from what I've read. And they won't be labeled "Made in China". They're being passed off as made in Venice.
If you watch the Samantha Brown series on hidden Venice, you will see the segment about the one of the guys that still makes masks in Venice. According to him, there are only 2 authentic mask makers in Venice. His masks are awesome. And you can tell the difference in quality when you compare his masks to the other China made masks.
