Visiting Umbria (Orvieto, Perugia, and Assisi, possibly Lake Trasimeno as well) in late September and was planning on proposing. What are some good location ideas in these areas to propose? Doesn't have to be extravagant just something pretty and picturesque would also be great
We were quite disappointed with Lake Trasimeno - nowhere memorable for a proposal.
We also stayed here for two or three nights - absolutely wonderful.

One of the little islands in Lago Trasimeno- beautiful scenery and not very crowded- we had a wonderful lunch at Ristorante l’Oso on Isola Maggiore. It’s outdoors right by the water’s edge and they have their own boat if you miss the ferry.
I really can't resist showing you what to me would be a great proposal spot in Umbria: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYG3JffgOU4
In Assisi there is a beautiful view if you go to the top of the Rocca Maggiore, overlooking the town. It's a bit of a hike, but you are probably young and fit. After the uphill walk I'm sure your girlfriend won't have the strength to say no.
On lake Trasimeno, there is the Rocca di Passignano, in the town of Passignano, which provides a great view of the lake, assuming it's not hazy, as it is sometimes in summer.
Orvieto I don't remember. It's been a long time since I went there.
Perugia is a pretty city. I've been there numerous times but I can't think of a place that might be appropriate for your needs off my head. It's kind of a busy city, and an urban environment, but I'm sure there are spots that offer great rural scenery around it, but I can't think of it now.
The gondola cage in Gubbio, suggested by Nancy, is kind of scary, at least from what I can remember about 40 years ago when I tried.
Perugia has a lot of overlook spots with beautiful views of the valleys below.
The Gubbio gondola cage IS a bit scary to get into because it keeps moving --- I watched it for quite a while to see how to clamber in. Then when I finally did it, and was in, I was so surprised that the helper guy bundled my husband in there with me! But the ride up and back is beautiful, especially since we went up through fog or a cloud down below into bright sunlight up on top.
I'm so glad I found this post because I am actually planning to propose in Perugia this fall too! I studied abroad in this city, so I feel I already have some spots in mind for the proposal. There are lots of scenic landscapes and backdrops in this city, especially in the Historic District. The infamous staircase comes to mind, but there are also some good spots near Piazza IV Novembre.
Oh, how wonderful. I don't have any suggestions, but my son-in-law proposed to my daughter in Italy. They had stayed the night in Cinque Terre, and then he just drove along the coastline from there, looking for a lovely spot.
We did a tour of Umbria this April and loved it a lot.
Not so impressed with Lake Trasimeno.
Assisi was amazing because of the history of the place, but it wouldn't be my choice to propose.
Spoleto, Perugia and Gubbio were great, but we loved Orvieto the most.
"but we loved Orvieto the most"
Oh, that gives me an idea. What about Civita di Bangnoregio (not far from Orvieto)? https://www.civita-di-bagnoregio.info/en/ It's technically not in Umbria, but it's only about 18 km from Orvieto, which is.
Orvieto is beautiful and romantic, a great place for a marriage proposal. Take a look at the medieval quarter. There are some beautiful viewpoints along the old city walls.
