Lisa, don't waste your time on the Porta Protese unless you like cheap new stuff...If you can remember the last time you visited the Sistine Chapel, multiply that number of people by a factor of 3 in about the same amount of space...I'm usually a reluctant participant in visiting Antique fairs all over the US and Europe...I only wish I had heard of Lungotevere Capoprati before my last trip to Rome.
Thanks Ron for the comprehensive list...saved ready for my next visit. I'm a budget traveller frequenting the markets for the makings of many meals. They are a visual and olfactory delight.
Testaccio has a fun neighborhood market geared to Romans rather than tourists. Lots of food - meats, fish, produce - and lots of inexpensive shoes and clothing. Have read that the market has developed into a clearance center of sorts for last year's styles - don't know fashion well enough to verify whether it's true or not, just that there was a lot there. Believe it goes Mon-Sat mornings until lunch (was there on a weekday morning). Great place to stroll off usual tourist path. Two metro stops from Termini a few blocks from the Piramide stop.
WOW, what great input not found in my books. You all are the best. I am saving all of it for trip in July and future reference.
