Maremma, Grosseto, and Saturnia

I still have a 3 day gap in my April Italy trip and have played with Venice and Cinque Terra, but then came across the hot springs near Saturnia and the national park Maremma and am very intrigued. I cant find much in travel books so was curious who has been, any recommendations on where to stay, etc. Some of the photos have been breathtaking.

Hi Anne, we stayed in Grosseto for two days last September between going from Siena to Rome and really enjoyed staying in the historic center of town. (We stayed at Hotel Bastiani) During the train ride from Grosseto to Rome, we passed some towns on the coast that reminded us of Cinque Terre. We enjoyed the adventure of being the only tourists from America that we encountered in Grosseto & during our day trip out to Follonica. But, if you haven't been to Venice, yet, there's no comparison - go to Venice. I would recommend the Maremma/Grosseto area as a possibility for a 3rd + trip to Italy.

We spent some time in the Maremma last year, though not in Grosseto nor the national park. I have a couple of other attractions to recommend. One is the Tarot Garden near Capalbio, full of enormous, colorful, whimsical sculptures by the late artist, Niki de Saint Phalle. We stayed in Saturnia, at the Hotel Saturno Fonte Puro, to enjoy the thermal springs, and liked that a lot. The town of Pitigliano is very close and worth a visit. There are numerous Etruscan sites in the area, including one close to Capalbio, just over the border of Lazio. We also loved Massa Marittima. On an earlier trip to the area, we stayed at a wonderful agriturismo, Ilune, close to Pitigliano. Highly recommended.
