March 2019 Free Museum Week - Going to Florence

Hi everyone,

I am going to be in Florence March 5-10, and when going to buy the Firenze Card and Accademia tickets, i was alerted that March 5-10 is going to be the Settimana della Cultura, Week of Culture. From what I understand, this is free entry (not including priority entry passes). I am a bit concerned about how crowded this is going to be though. On one hand, yay! free museum access, but on the other, the crowds might be crazy. And personally, I think I'd rather pay and not be bombarded by the crowds.

From what I understand, any "state museum or archeological site" will be free. I'm not really sure what all that includes? And then from there, is the Firenze card even worth it anymore?

Also, if anyone can provide insight as to how the crowded the city will be at this point, that would be great. (I read somewhere, first Sunday October-March are also free, so if maybe someone has taken advantage of one of those days?) I picked this week thinking, it's right before spring break and it's not peak season yet, hoping it would be less crowded. But of course, I would end up picking the free museum week instead!

Here's the list of State Museums in Florence:

And then from there, is the Firenze card even worth it anymore?

One of the biggest benefits of that card is skip-the-ticket line entry to the busiest museums (Uffizi and Accademia top the list) plus covering the cost of a multitude of museums, many of them State, over 72 hours. I can't justify the 85€ price of a card that can't be used for priority entrance at a chunk of Florence museums which are free that week.

I've never been in Florence during a Free Sight week or day, but it seems to me that another Travel Forum posting a couple years back had first-hand accounts that sights were mobbed with bargain-seekers. Denver has similar Free days to museums and the Zoo, and they're usually much busier than would be ideal, so I'd imagine you'd have a similar experience in Florence, for sure. Maybe there'd be a freak snowstorm that kept people away, but otherwise, if there's no alternative, the usual crowd-beating tips like arriving very early or very late might be the best option. Hope you get to enjoy the sights without it feeling like you're stuck at the DMV for a license renewal, or an interminable airport security queue.

In addition to the really "big" sights in Florence, be sure to visit the Bargello, a wonderful, somewhat smaller "big" sight!

Oh I didn’t even think of that— just so I’m understanding completely: even the priority skip-the-line with the card will be unavailable? How unfortunate.

As the Firenze Card link I gave you above states:

For the occasion, the Galleria dell 'Accademia and all museums
belonging to the Uffizi Galleries and the Bargello museums have
decreed that on the following days: THE PRIORITY ACCESS FOR
FIRENZECARD POSSESSORS WILL NOT BE GUARANTEED. It is advisable to
check the websites of interest to evaluate the convenience of
Firenzecard in this week.

There's definitely no priority access to the Uffizi with the card that week although they ARE testing timed vouchers at that one:

https://www.uffizi.it/en/notices/sunday-how-to-get-into-uffizi

Also mentioned on that page:

On the above-mentioned occasions, priority admissions are not valid
(i.e. for owners of Firenze Card
or subscriptions), except for
pregnant women, disabled persons and school groups included in daily
quotas involving free reservations.

Of special note, it looks like priority access to the Accademia has been discontinued altogether for Firenzecard holders.

We inform our kind visitors that from March 1st 2019 priority access
to the Galleria dell'Accademia of Florence for Firenze Card possessors
will not be permitted. For further information, please contact
055.055.

You very likely won't encounter very long queues at others of the Florence's museums so not having priority access shouldn't be a problem.

Yes, you would rather pay. We saw lines many blocks long in Florence on a free Sunday in October --- luckily, we were on our way to a wonderful for-pay site that was almost empty (the Benozzo Gozzoli chapel).

So you could seek out the places that are not free and find out if the crazy busy places have special evening hours or tour guides with evening access. If you must go to one of the free museums, line up REALLY early in the morning, say, more than an hour before the museum opens.
