Maps that help identify ZTLs

Does anyone know of any maps that are available that will identify the ZTLs if we are going to be renting a car and driving around in Tuscany?

When I went to Italy 2 years ago I did a Google search and found several sites that had maps. Sorry, i did not keep their URLs. Just try a search and they will pop up.

This website has some basic info.... http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/driving/traffic_cameras_speeding.htm

For specific towns you likely will need to search for just them. Probably more practical is that in Tuscany, you can just assume that each town has some ZTL, so look to drive around rather than through, and if visiting a town, plan on parking on the outskirts and walking or taking a bus to the city center. Many towns will direct you to parking as you enter the town.

First of all, relax. Before we went to Tuscany in a rented car, I was concerned from everything I had read. We spent a week driving around and had no problems identifying and avoiding ZTL's. Here's some guidelines:

Not all towns in Tuscany are walled hill towns. Towns like Greve and Castellina are villages. If you are traveling through a town on a larger state road, like SR222, you won't suddenly find yourself in a ZTL. You can actually drive into the city square at Greve with no problem, but we parked in the large free parking lot and walked to the square.

Walled towns like San Gimignano, Volterra and even the small town of Radda are walled hill towns. Usually everything within the wall is ZTL. Outside the walls, there are big honking signs that say ZTL! There are parking lots just outside the walls. You just park and walk through the gates to the town.

Larger cities like Florence and Siena can be a little trickier. We stayed at Castillo di Verrazzano on the outskirts of Greve. Gino, who works there, suggested we take the bus instead of driving to Florence. We took his advice and were glad we did. We also did not drive in Rome.

We did drive in Siena. I was following our Garmin and the instructions were a little fuzzy at one point. We were just outside the historic district, looking for the soccer stadium where you can park and I almost took a wrong turn, but again, there were large signs and conspicuous cameras. I just continued straight, looped around and found the parking entrance, which is almost hidden.

RS guidebooks cover ZTL in larger cities. Get this map as well, although I can't remember if it shows ZTLs: https://www.amazon.com/Michelin-Map-Italy-Toscana-Italian/dp/2067126679

Really, relax, stay observant and enjoy driving in magical Tuscany!

PS One last note - Play it safe and observe the speed limit signs. I found them to be reasonable. It might be as slow as 30 kph (18 mph) in the heart of a small village, but you'll understand why. Most locals observe the speed limits and don't get upset if you do. On the rare occasion they wanted to go faster, I just pulled over and let them by. I usually got an appreciative wave as they passed.

At any entry point there will be the sign linked below. A round white circle with a red border. That's the International Road sign for "No Motor Vehicles Permitted". In Florence they even installed a light which turns red when the ZTL is active, or green when it's open to all (at night and Sunday)

ZTL sign

Just keep an eye for Parking lot signs

It's a good idea to become familiar with the International road signage system (see below article) used in the EU.

Doug Mac's advise is on point.
I went into it a little too observant and feared more than I should have in some cases.

Excluding the main cities and talking about the smaller towns all over Tuscany:
1.) The main routes connecting towns are not going to take you into a ZTL
2.) The walled towns you have to pass through an obvious Wall to enter the ZTL. There are often signs warning you of a ZTL ahead but until the obvious wall area the ZTL has not yet started. Again as per 1 ; the routes passing through or by these towns will not enter into ZTL's and will have parking areas.

For major cities like Florence, Pisa and others, all beats are off there could be ZTL's outside of any walled areas.

They are all well marked with the sign I posted above.

Your biggest worry should be the SPEED LIMITS not the ZTL.

Speed limits are enforced exclusively electronically by fancy technology which also includes a hidden camera which takes photos of cars and automatically sends a ticket each time the speed limit is violated. You will not see a cop around, yet their watchful eyes see you. There are more cameras on Italian roads than in all Hollywood studios. Dont get naked just because you don't see anybody around.

Excellent advice from Roberto. I wish I'd known that. You should see the size of the fines!

In my driving through smaller towns, I also found the signage to be prominent for both ZTLs and parking areas. Rick's books will always mention parking areas for the smaller towns, even when they don't discuss the ZTL, because it always was hard to drive and park in the narrow old streets, even before the ZTL was applied. In addition to maps in the book, Google Maps will also show parking lots when you search for "parking near Montalcino," etc.

Thanks everyone! It makes sense that there would be clear signage. We will definitely heed the warnings of the traffic/speed cameras.
We are planning on driving around to check out some of the hill towns while staying in siena and then drive over to Lucca to stay there, We will be dropping the car off in Lucca. Have no interest in driving in Florence or Rome. I know I wouldn't be able to handle that craziness!! Lol

Definitely putting my mind at ease on this, getting excited, wish I didn't have to wait 6 months!!!!
