Maps of Liguria and Tuscany

I want to purchase a "good" driving map of the SML/CT area and also a map of the Tuscany region. Driving from Milan to Modena to Siena to SG to CT to SML. Thanks much. Yes - I did look at the Michelin map, but wasn't too happy with it.

Actually what you really need is a good GPS. We are just back from 10 days in Tuscany and I don't know how we could have done it with just a map. Once off the main roads, the markings/signs,etc., is minimal.

Why were you unhappy with the Michelin, and which one/what scale?

IMHO GPS is way too unpredictable. Just when you need it most, you get "Recalculating." I like to use GPS in conjunction with a good map, so I recommend getting the Touring Club maps. They're outstanding. You can buy one for each region. Tuscany is #7 and Liguria is #6. www.touringclub.com Another bonus is that they're lightly laminated in plastic, so they're very sturdy.

My wife just received her Michelin map of Toscana from Amazon. What a great map. There's even a lot of Umbria on it as well. It's a very large and detailed fold out map. My wife is plotting out her Tuscany and Umbria journey over the next couple of weeks. Then, we will input the addresses where she and our daughter will be visiting and staying into our Garmin GPS with European maps. In September, she will take both to Italy. The GPS will be primary and the map will be backup. There's nothing wrong with the Michelin map of Toscana.

Our GPS was very dependable. The only problem, it was minor, was that sometimes it took several different approaches to get it to recognize certain locations. But once locked it, it worked to perfection.

The Italian Touring Club maps are great, you can get them from amazon.com or buy them in Italy for the regions you need.

Dianne, buy a GPS here, load it with maps of Italy, learn how to use it here, and take it, and your maps to Italy. We never take a trip in the EU without both. You can do the trip with just one of these two "tools" in your toolbox, but both will make things so much easier, for you and your "Navigator". PS Don't even attempt to drive in Italy unless you know what a "ZTL" is and where they are located in each town you may visit! PPS Our GPS has a function that warns you when you are approaching the fixed radar traps along the Italian roads. This function alone can pay for your trip!
