Buy the maps locally. You want the best scale. My experience is that the maps I get locally are almost always better than what I get here.

Buy them locally. You can find maps at newspaper stands, bookstores, stationary stores, tobacconists' stores, gas stations.
Michelin, Touring Club Italiano, De Agostini, are some of the top brands, but many more are available.
If you intend to travel in Tuscany only ask for one for Tuscany only, or at most Tuscany & Umbria (the two regions often come together). Don't buy a map that includes more (Like all of Central Italy, or all Northern Italy from Rome and up). Italy has an extensive network of roads to connect the tens of thousand towns and villages in the country. The larger the area included in the map, the less detail you get.

Hi
As Roberto advised buy locally.
There is a number of bookstores in central Florence that have english maps.
AA Road map Italy 2 - Tuscany from AA scale 2km to 10mm, or 3miles to the 1 inch.
While it was good for regional travel, the little town maps where not that great.

Buying maps locally in Italy used to be good advice, but online shopping has changed things. Even autostrada stores have a poor selection these days, and local bookstores are closing and reducing inventory. The scale you need is 1:200,000 and the best are Touring Club Italiano or DeAgostini. The Touring Club maps are available on Amazon and at a good price. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/8836548342

for good road maps look to Touring Club Italiano maps. If you are thinking of using them for driving directions you may do better with a GPS either in the rental or bring one from home. More $$$$$ than a map but less chance of getting lost and using your valuable vacation time getting "un-lost". We use both, the driver with the GPS and the "navigator" in the passenger seat with the map. Enjoy your time.
