I am trying to find map apps of Italy in ENGLISH , but all seem to be in Italian. For example a trail map of CT. I have an iPad and seems difficult.

Dianne, There are lots of offline Maps available for the iPhone and iPad. Have a look at the App Store for some ideas. However, I suspect most of them will be configured more for use in populated areas, and may not have a good level of detail of the trails in the C.T. I used "city. Maps to go" and "ulmon". They were great and you don't need wifi to use them.
