Mangia... Off the Beaten Track Florence? Rome? Assisi?

My best friend and I are one week out from our trip to Italy.

We are visiting Rome, Florence, Assisi, & Spello.

We would love recommendations for local eateries that we do not want to miss. We aren't looking for somewhere fancy or where reservations are required weeks in advance. Tell us about a magical place we can eat local food. We are on the hunt for the best carbonara & mushroom risotto we can find... Is there a local dish we MUST try?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Rome - my go to place is Carlo Menta in Trastevere. Honest Roman food at very reasonable prices. In Assisi I have always liked La Lanterna. It's on the road going up from Piazza Comune to San Rufino. You'll see a lit lantern on the left. I've eaten there every year for 17 years - never found a reason not to. In Florence I like the upstairs at Mercato Centrale. You can each order from different places but still sit together.

@ Robert, Thank you SO much for your recommendations. We are staying just half a mile from Carlo Menta in Rome! I have added them all to my travel map!

Less than a week. I have added restaurants and must see's to my map. I also added locations of water fountains, wine windows, and gelato near where we will be. Any other suggestions on what to add?

We are just starting to plan now. Love your idea of mapping the locations of wine windows, gelato, restaurants & such. Brilliant. May I ask if you just did it on Google maps, so I may know how to best borrow your idea?

Thank you

Roberta,
Yes, I am using Google Maps.

Not sure if you are interested, but here's my current map.

We decided we want as much as our trip to be wandering instead of on a tight schedule. I added where we are staying and where we are meeting for the tours we are going, but the majority of the spots are wander locations. We thought it would be great to pull up the map where ever we end up and see if something amazing is in the area.

Susan,
The Spello blog is AMAZING. Thanks for sharing. I may go ahead to the airport and see if they will take me TODAY!

I agree with all the restaurants recommended in that blog post on Spello and would add Osteria de Dada. Reservations a day ahead are often necessary because it’s so small.
