We will be traveling from Sicily to Malta for a few days. Is it easier to travel around from Valletta or the Sliema waterfront. We want to visit Mdina, Gozo and the Blue Grotto.
Any hotel recommendations? Thank ypu.
Sylvia - Take a look at the link below for information of where to stay in Malta.
Both are easy, but I think Valetta is much more central as all buses radiate right outside the walls to different destinations on the island. I also didn't find Sliema attractive at all (very overdeveloped, tall buildings everywhere), whereas Valetta is old and historical and great for walking and checking out the major attractions. I stayed in a traditional yet modern apartment in Valetta close to the Upper Barrakka Gardens and the Saluting Battery. I found it on Booking.com, which is a great place to search (Barrakkka Suites - http://www.booking.com/Share-Y7xkLK).
If you can, give yourself a few days for Gozo. Also, check out the Three Cities across from Valetta.
PS. This post should be under "General Europe", not "Italy".
Malta is easy to navigate on your own (no need for a tour). The bus system out of Valletta goes just about anywhere. For me, Valletta was a great location as the main base due to all the nearby attractions and the excellent transport connections. I bought a multi day bus pass that worked out well.
