Malta from Catania

We will be in Sicily for 3 weeks from March 16 until April 9, and part of that time will be near Siracusa and Catania. We have an interest in a brief side trip to Malta (mostly to see the Caravaggio painting) and wondered if anyone can relate experience with getting to and from Malta from Siclly. I had checked airfares, but they seem quite expensive, considering that within Europe you can usually get very cheap flights between cities.

There are ferries to Valetta from Catania and from Pozzala. Getting yourselves to Pozzala would probably be the best way. I remember the trip being only about an hour but I may be wrong. Google is your friend here.

We took the ferry from Catania to Malta which took 4-5 hours at night. The return from Malta to Pozzallo, Sicily was much quicker, maybe an hour. If you are going to go all the way out there, it is worth spending a night or two, at least.
