Malta after Sicily

We are doing the Sicily tour Sept of 2019. We are interested in adding on a week on Malta, anyone with advice on adding to beginning or end of tour? how about getting to Malta? we are coming from BC Canada, would appreciate any input

In what city does your tour end? The easiest way is to fly round-trip from either Palermo on Malta Air, or Catania on Malta Air or Ryan Air. The Malta-Sicily ferry is just too inconvenient and requires a coach bus to get all the way south from Catania to the ferry station in Pozzallo.

roswynne,

It would be extremely easy to add a week in Malta at the end of your Sicily tour. I believe Air Malta is the only one offering non-stop flights from Palermo to Valletta, so that would be a good choice. If you're planning on returning home right after the Malta stop, you could consider Air Malta to Frankfurt (or other hub) and then a code share connection back to B.C. (Air Canada?).

For sightseeing on Malta, Rick Steves doesn't publish a guidebook on that so you might have a look at the Lonely Planet version (which I believe was just updated this year).

My son and D-I-L just visited Malta a few months ago and they raved about it. Lots of history there!

One question though..... if you're visiting in "Sept. of 2019", I assume your trip is now over? Since your post is dated Oct. 20, I'm assuming you mean Sept. 2020?

Where in B.C. are you located?

Yes of course I meant 2020, thanks for the replies, tour ends in Catania, thought to put an extra day in Catania then on to Malta, its good to know you can fly to a major hub from Malta. Still wondering if it would be better for us to start in malta then fly to Sicily to meet up with the tour. Also can anyone tell me if its better to do a Malta tour or use Valletta as a base and do local day tours around the island as neither of us wants to drive, we are located on Vancouver Island

I don't think it matters but it's probably easier on the body to make the first flight (with connections) as short as you can. It's difficult to get to Malta and Sicily without multiple stops from either the US or Canada (especially west coasts of either), so just base you decision on cost and convenience of each itinerary.

Valetta has a great bus system that goes everywhere on the island. No need for a tour, as you can do easy day trips by bus (you can even get from the airport by bus provided the schedule works out). Besides, Valetta itself has multiple days worth of things to do in one compact space. I would definitely base from there.

We are going to Sicily and Malta next spring with nine days in Malta divided between Gozo (thee days) and six in Valletta. Fly on AirMalta, best rates, good service and you car obtain a fare to take luggage. Yes, after flying across the pond, don't immediately add another flight, especially where connections may be uncertain and/or long wait in airport.
