We are starting our journey at the Malpensa Airport. We have one day/night to spend elsewhere so we can visit Ottone (home of ancestors)starting in the morning of our second day. Does anyone have suggestions of a good route to take? We can go by way of Plaisance, spend the night, then towards Bobbio to Ottone. Or we can go south by way of Tortona, spend a night in Genoa and then drive to Ottone in the morning. Any suggestions of places to stay on either route or anything special to see (besides beautiful countryside) on either route? Thank you so much.

Either route will take you approximately the same time. I had no idea what Plaisance was till I saw Google Maps.
I suggest you learn how to say Piacenza (Pee-aw-CHEN-tsah) or nobody will know what you are talking about. In any case don't stay there. It's notoriously the ugliest city in Emilia.
