Malpensa to Milano Centrale

Has anyone taken the Malpensa Express from Malpensa to Milano Centrale? Is it easier than using the subway from Cadorna to Centrale?

The Malpensa Express goes to Cadorna, not Milano Centrale. Trenitalia has two trains/day from Malpensa to Milano Centrale. Your best transportation choice is the frequent shuttle bus service (2-3 times/hour) offered by two different companies.

Hi Ed. The trains to/from MXP are confusing. The Malpensa Express is a train between Malpensa and Cadorna. Trenitalia runs a train, new last fall, between MXP and Centrale. If you take the train to Cadorna, you have to take the Metro to Centrale. The bus is an option, but we had a bad experience with it. The 50 minute trip became 90+ due to heavy morning traffic. The bus may be cheaper by a few euros, but time is precious too. If you are going on to another city from Milan, and leaving from Centrale, Trenitalia is certainly the way to go.

There are now two trains departing the Malpensa train station for Milan. The Malpensa Express goes to Milan-Cordona. It does not go to Milan-Centrale. If you want Milan-Centrale, you will need to take the other train. I've attached a sample train schedule. There are two ways to tell the difference between the two train runs. 1) In the Arrival column, MI N CA is Cardona. MI C.LE is Milan-Centrale. 2) In the 2nd Class fare column, the fare to Cardona is 11E. The fare to Centrale is 7E. The train to Milan-Centrale departs hourly from Malpensa during the day.

I looked into this a decided to take the bus. Only reason to take the train is rush hour traffic. They have a pretty good web site. I'm in planning stages like you, so can't offer any direct experience except blog postings. Ciao!

Ed, As the others have mentioned, the Malpensa Express (which is operated by the LeNord Railway) travels from Malpensa to Cadorna station, which is near Via Dante and several KM from Milano Centrale. Using the Metro from Cadorna to Centrale is fairly easy (five stops on the M2 line), but that's an "extra step" that I'd try to avoid if possible (especially when hauling luggage, etc.). Trenitalia service from Malpensa is a fairly new service. AFAIK, those trains run from Milano Centrale to Gallarate station, and then a Bus is used to take passengers to / from Malpensa T1 or T2. The other option is of course the Malpensa Shuttle (Bus) which travels directly to Milano Centrale from the airport. For the cost (~€7.50) it's still a good choice IMO. I used the Shuttle last year, and the trip was an easy 50-minutes. I'll probably use it again on my trip this year. Happy travels!

Larry is right and I am wrong. Trenitalia used to have only two trains a day between Malpensa and Centrale. Now there is hourly service. If your arrival at Malpensa coincides well with the next train departure, take the train. If you would have to wait nearly an hour for the next train, take the bus.
