Malpensa to Menaggio (Lake Como) taxi?

Hello
In a few weeks my family of 4 will fly in to Malpensa airport in Milan and we decided not to rent a car. Although expensive we plan on doing a taxi or uber there and then back to Milan centrale train station to our next Destination.
After a long flight I thought train then ferry will take too long. My fear is reserving tickets and having our flight delayed. I did look and it would be an additional 2.5 to 3 hours of traveling to do it that way.
Would it be better to just hail a taxi or reserve an Uber? We will only have backpacks and carry on luggage.
Thank you

Welcome to the forum!

Uber does not exist as we know it in Italy
Only in Rome and Milan I believe and it is more like a high priced limo service

Hire a driver
Try here
www.suntransfers.com

I believe with 4 people you will need a van

You don’t “hail” taxis in Italy
You must go to an official taxi rank or use one of the apps
Of have your hotel call for one

We did a transfer from Lugano to Bellagio and Bellagio to Malpensa with them and it was professional and well done.

Good to know.
I checked and it looks like you can reserve an uber in certain areas of Italy.
Thank you for sharing this company website, I'll check it out.

Just a few extra questions.

  • Are you going just for the day?
  • Does it have to be Menaggio or do you just want to experience Lake Como?
  • Where is your next destination?
  • What are you planning on doing with your luggage?

Depending on your answers there may be some alternatives that are cheaper and easier for you.

Uber doesn’t exist at all in Italy. There are private car services that may act like Uber, ie people using their own cars like a taxi but I can assure you that none of these is Uber. It’s illegal in Italy and understandably so. Just use suntours. With 4 people it will automatically show you vans and not cars. €295 one way. About 1.5 hours depending on traffic. If it’s in July add another 45 minutes to an hour. Or if you want to not pay almost €300 for a private car service you can use public transportation. Much cheaper that way. That’s how I’d do it if I wasn’t renting a car.

Thank you all for your help!

Are you going just for the day? We are staying in Menaggio 2 nights
Does it have to be Menaggio or do you just want to experience Lake Como?
Where is your next destination? Venice
What are you planning on doing with your luggage
We are only bringing backpacks and carry ons.

We are using the train in between cities our entire trip except this first leg. If doesn't look straight forward in terms of times and how often the ferry's run to get there.
At this point we think we just want to get off the plane and have a ride straight there. Unless there's something I'm missing. That is very expensive but might be the best way at this point.

You are going to have a long day ahead of you. Hiring a driver will be very expensive, but the quickest time to Mennagio.

Tour option is to plan your trip from the airport to Milano Centrale to Varenna and take a ferry to Mennagio. You will save a bundle of money. Timing is everything however.

From the Airport, bus or train to Milano Centrale.

Train from Centrale to Varenna.

Ferry from Varenna to Mennagio.

Total travel time should be about 3 hours. However, you have to time your train selections to get the quickest train to Varenna. So, the total amount of time getting there will be more than 3 hours unless everything clicks into place.

I would encourage you to stay in Varenna and day trip to Mennagio to save yourself some travel time on the first day and the last day to Venice. Obviously, your choice. Good luck.

Thank you so much for the info!
That's what I thought after some research. I could reserve the train etc but all that travel time isn't worth it after the long flight.
So we'll pay for a driver and save elsewhere.
Thanks again everyone!

Last time we stayed in Bellagio we hired a driver from MXP to Bellagio and are so very glad that we did. After a 24 hour flight from Australia, the last thing we wanted was hassles with over crowded trains.

For the rest of our month long Italian trip, we used the trains extensively, but there are sometimes when comfort is needed.

We are going again in September, to Varenna this time, and I have once more booked a driver. This time Lake Como transfers which has some excellent reviews.

im, flying into milan next april and hiring bellagio taxi, quoted 250 which is not bad. don't want to deal with trains and ferrys after a long long flight either. I will also be using them to take us to lugano and looking into bellagio to rome, to avoid rome termini with all the crime there, rather budget for this travel then hassle the thieves. we are both 62.

to avoid rome termini with all the crime there

What "all the crime there"? What have you been reading?

Violent crime is nearly unheard of, yes there some pickpockets, like wherever crowds of unaware folks gather, and sometimes "helpers" at the ticket machines.

They aren't after your luggage with dirty clothes, they want money and maybe a phone.

So simple precautions can thwart them, money and cards and passports hidden under your clothes (I use a money belt, others prefer a neck wallet or other safe storage, and phone not in your hand.

You will save a fortune, have better scenery, and be much much faster. No car driver can do 300 kilometres an hour like a fast train - maximum speed on the autostrada is 130 kph plus stops and breaks.

I have been in and out of Roma Termini many times and never had troubles - I use basic security methods.

I can’t imagine the cost of a driver from Bellagio to Rome
It’s at least a 6 hour drive and about 650 km

Bellagio to Rome by taxi will be up to $1,500. A cheaper way to avoid Termini would be to fly from Milan to Rome, and take a taxi to/from the airports. And an even cheaper way is to take the train and get off at Tiburtina.
