Malpensa Express to Milan Central?

In the s to the 2011 book it says that they started running an a second train to Central. All I can find is the express into Cadorna? Does the train to Central exist or did they cancel it?

There is a Trenitalia train directly to Centrale. On Trenitalia's website search "Malpensa Aeroporto" to "Milano Central." 7 euros, 45-52 minutes. If you are going beyond Milan, say to Venice or Rome, check that routing as well. You can now get connections to a highspeed ES train and book one ticket, Malpensa to whereever.

The train just started running this past fall -- Sept -- so most guidebooks will not be up to date on this subject.

Assuming that you have selected the English button on the www.trenitalia.com website, put Malpensa in the departure window and milan in the arrival window, Trenitalia will bring up all runs to Milan Central and all runs to Cadorna. You have to look with caution. Two ways to tell the difference. First, the fares. The fare to Milan Centrale is 7E. The fare to Cadorna is 11E. Second, look at the arrival column. MI C. LE is Milano Centrale. MI N CA is Cadorna.

This is great news! I would rather go by train than by bus to Milan Centrale. Here is my question: Can you purchase your ticket on to further cities from the ticket booth at the airport? Or do you just purchase you ticket into Milan? I have been searching for this information with no luck. We will be going to Venice directly and not staying in Milan. I won't have the opportunity to use the website for purchase I don't think...

You can buy tickets for any Trenitalia train at (almost) any Trenitalia ticket office/train station. Thanks to advice on this board, I prepared a spreadsheet with the date, time destination and train numbers I wanted. So when my minimal Italian failed, I could simply show the ticket agent my plan. Or you can use a kiosk. When you arrive at Malpensa, buy a ticket all the way to Venice. You can even buy your Venice-to-wherever-next tickets, and might just get the "mini" discount for buying in advance. We got in the habit of bying several days in advance for each leg where a reserved seat was a part of the equation.

thanks for the info Laurel, and that is what we will run with. We can always be adaptable and go with it. :-)

It's remarkably difficult to find information about this new train on the internet! You guys are so knowledgeable. I'm visiting Venice myself in April and flying into Milan. I will need to train from Malpensa to Venice, and then at the end of the trip, from Firenze back to Malpensa. What's confusing me on Trenitalia is that some trains appear to change in Milano Centrale and others go direct. For instance, there is a 2 pm train that looks as though it goes directly from Firenze SMN to Malpensa without stopping - the time is shorter and it only shows one train, the ES Italia. The other trains look like they stop at Centrale and there are two trains - the ES Italia and Espresso. Am I reading that right? And, for the trains that do stop at Centrale, is it hard to transfer - ie, is it clearly marked where you have to go to catch the connecting train?

The 2:00 (4:00), Train #9552 does stop at Milano Centrale but continues on to Malpensa. The other trains require a change at Milano Centrale. On the Trenitalia site, check the 'Selection' circle at the right end of the line and then click on the 'Details by Selection.' When the details appear, check the 'Info' circle at the right side and the details of the stops, and the full itinerary will appear. If two or more trains appear, click the 'Info' circle for each to see its respective itinerary. I hope this helps.

It does, thank you very much. Do you happen to know how far the transfer is at Centrale? Is it just a hop across the platform or is it a totally different area of the station? They don't give you very much time to transfer!

Vala, The platforms at Milano Centrale are all in the same place, so changing trains usually involves walking to the end of the platform and then across to the next. You can get some idea by having a look at This photo. Milano Centrale can be a bit "chaotic" at the best of times, so be prepared! Also, be sure to wear a Money Belt and keep watch on your luggage. If needed, the WC's are one floor down along a "moving sidewalk" and these are "pay per use" (€1 as I recall). Happy travels!
