We are spending most of our vacation days in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, but leaving out of Malpensa on our return. We had planned to spend 2 days in Milan but now my travel companion wants to go to Zermatt so we may have just a few evening hours in Italy which we had hoped to spend in Varenna. I am afraid I will not have any time to shop for gifts in Milan and wonder if the shops in MXP are open 24 hours. Our flight leaves at 10:30 am from Milan. Thanks!

The answer is "SOME" but not very many. With your boarding and gate check-in requirements you'll probably tied up from 9 AM on... I know from experience that shops at MXP are not open 24 hours.

MXP is not "Italy's finest Airport." Hard to believe it's a little more than 10 years old. If the Air France/Alitalia merger goes through, Air France has said they will sell off the cargo end of Alitalia, move flights to a "hub" approach at FCO... and CLOSE MXP.
Having lost my luggage TWICE there I will not miss this "old" airport. Understand your dilemma and I wish you luck on getting items before 9 AM at MXP...
