Malpensa Aeroporto Hotel & Restaurant

Buon Giorno!

We will be traveling from Firenze to the Milano Airport for the last night of our journey, arriving late in the afternoon for a plane the next morning. I have a couple questions.

1). I assume the train will land us at Malpensa Aeroporto (MXP) T1 or T2. Or is there a better stop.

2) I'd rather stay off the airport site, for a more Italian ambiance on our last night. Any suggestions on the area to stay? A short taxi ride would be fine.

3) In that (those) area(s), can you recommend a restaurant? I'm partial to Osso Bucca.

We hate airport hotels, but for MXP have been very happy with the family-run hotel Osteria della Pista that has a shuttle both from and to the airport. Good restaurant for dinner and breakfast.

  1. The train is fast but it does not actually fly, therefore it will not "land" but simply "arrive". The train from Florence will arrive at MILANO CENTRALE. From Milano Centrale you will take another train called Malpensa Express, which will take you from Milano Centrale to Milano Malpensa. Stations are at both T1 and T2. The terminal T2 is reserved to low cost airlines, such as EasyJet, so you will likely depart from T1.

  2. Unfortunately the airport is in the middle of nowhere, so it is a rather isolated area where there mainly fields, forests, and airport hotels (many with restaurants inside), but not really a town. The Malpensa Express does proceed to nearby Gallarate now (I think, since the extension is rather new), so you could potentially stay in Gallarate. The next morning you could take the train back or a taxi (about 20 min ride but I'm sure over 30€). I used to stay in Gallarate in the early 1990s when the airport was the old Malpensa (basically only T2 was present) and there were no trains going to the airport and the closest station was Gallarate on the Milan-Domodossola line. If you like modern art in Gallarate there is the MAGA museum.

  3. I've generally stayed at the Best Western Cavalieri della Corona, and eaten at their hotel restaurant (there isn't much else around), but I don't remember if they have Ossobuco (I presume that is what you intended to write with Osso Bucca). They have a shuttle to the terminals and back, but I don't think they operate before 5am. If you stay in Gallarate I'm sure there will be several restaurants that serve Ossobuco. It's been a long time so I don't remember where I ate, I think it was called "La Rotaia" but I don't know if it still exists.

Hi, Giangilberto from Milan, in my view, the most useful piece of advice is to ask any hotel where you plan to stay if they offer a shuttle service to the airport in time for your flight, it all depends on your departure time if it’s very early, there could be significant issues, so booking a taxi the night before might be a better alternative.
As for the Malpensa Express, there are also stops at Ferno-Lonate Pozzolo with the first morning train at 5:37 AM so you could stay there if you like, as the area is right next to the airport; here is the official website:

Gallarate has changed a lot since then the nineties it's built up now, with plenty of hotels and restaurants. and the area is heavily urbanized much like everything surrounding Milan and the entire pianura padana, where there is less and less countryside and more urban development.
Another tip for a final treat during your visit to Italy is to stay in one of the towns on the southern end of Lago Maggiore, places like Arona or Sesto Calende are very close to the airport and full of character.
