Making train reservations with a Rail Italy pass

We are travelling to Italy in mid-September, 2015. We purchased a rail pass because it does pencil out for us economically. I have a couple of questions about the logistics of using it. I know that we need to validate it on the first day of use but do we ever need to validate again? Many of our trips will be on Regionale trains, can we just hop on and off these? Lastly for trip legs requiring reservations can we purchase the reservations on the day of travel or should it be done ahead of time? Thanks

You only have the pass activated once at a train station before your first trip. When taking regional trains, you are free to hop on an off with no additional ticket or reservation, just be sure to have the travel date filled in on your pass. Seat reservations for faster trains are sold on the same day of travel, or you can get a couple at any one station, if you know your plans. To make a seat reservation at www.trenitalia.com takes a few steps (start to buy a ticket, look for small link to "View other offers," offer = Global Pass).
