making Siena home base instead of Florence

4 nights of our trip to Italy we were going to make Florence our home base, day tripping to Sienna, Lucca, Pisa, I am wondering if it would be more time-economical to make Siena our home base. The transportation might be better?

Others will chime in I am sure but Florence is the transportation hub. Transport to those places will be much easier out of Florence.

If you're using public transportation Florence is a better transportation hub. It's a shorter time to Pisa and Lucca from Florence than from Sienna.

The sense of travelling out to Florence three of the four days you are spending there eludes me, but in any case transportation to/from Siena is slow and day trips from Siena are difficult.

To from Siena wasn't bad. bus to train station toFlorence, back around midnight, tzxi to hotel. That wasn't bad at all. But going to the other cities seemed more difficult.

I was hoping to do Pisa and Lucca in one day. It looks like the conntections were time-consuming.

About Florence ..... I know, I know :)) I have been to Florence 3 times already. Of course, I have only scratched the surface but have not touched the other towns. I am going with my son, and he can only take so much art, etc. I could eat it up!

I have not yet seen the Medici Chapel so will do that this trip.

So I may have to do more checking on transportation.

From your original post:

"The transportation might be better?"

No, Florence has much better transportation connections than Siena.

It's unanimous, Florence has better connections, unless you are going to towns in southern Tuscany, where some trips might be easier from Siena.

Go to Rome2Rio.com and compare your routes, as well as different modes of transportation. The site has links to schedules.

"I was hoping to do Pisa and Lucca in one day. It looks like the conntections were time-consuming"

From Florence this is easy. Bus or train to Lucca, then bus from Lucca to Pisa, then bus or train from Pisa back to Florence. I did this in March 1989, but it remains one of my best ever travel days. By doing them in this order, I got the to Leaning Tower just as the souvenir vendors were leaving, and the marble in the Field of Miracles looked lovely in the afternoon light.

From Siena this would indeed be more time consuming.
