Making a tour schedule

My wife and I will be traveling to Italy in Mid may for 12 nights. We will be staying with family close to Rome the first four nights and the last two. We wanted to travel to Florence, Venice, and perhaps Naples. We would like some suggestions on where to stay, eat, visit, etc. We are not opposed to visiting other towns along the train route. We were thinking of spending two nights each in three towns but will take suggestions. Our air travel is taken care of and we would like to schedule the remainder of the trip ASAP.

Rick Steve's tour book for Italy has lots of suggestions for accommodations and places to see and eat at in those cities. This would be a good starting point. Is it Naples you want to see or Pompeii? Consider staying in Sorrento instead of Naples. Depending on what you want to see, you also could possibly do this as a day trip from Rome.

I would only suggest you try to spend 3 nights in each location. With two nights, you are only getting one full day in each, which is not, IMHO, enough to really savor the place. In Venice, we liked this B&B http://www.aitagliapietra.com/homepage.htm. Good price, good location, amazing host!

If you only want to visit Naples to see Pompeii I would suggest doing it as a day trip from Rome. Florence and Venice are in the opposite direction so it would make more sense than doing Naples as an overnight. I would spend 2 nights in Venice and the rest in Florence. I would suggest going from Rome to Venice spending two nights there then heading to Florence. From Florence if you wish to do a day trip to Siena or Pisa it will be very easy. Grab a guide book and make a list of what you wish to see in each of these cities then decide if you'll have time for a day trip. For places to stay, I always use venere.com. You can check hotels by budget, type or location. Donna

Thanks for the suggestions. I have actually bought all of the "Rick Steve's" books and started planning our route last night. We decided that after Florence and Venice to travel south to Sorrento and make day trips to Naples, Pompei, and the Amalfi Coast before returning to Rome. I guess that at this point we would appreciate any suggestions or advice in making these plans. Thanks again for the help!
