Maiori questions

We are on a spring '08 package tour of Italy. We will be spending three nights in Maiori on the Amalfi Coast. We have some free time and we want to go to Ravello and Positano for a few hours. Is it easy to catch a taxi or some other public transportation from Maiori to Ravello and then Positano? Cost and convenience will be a big factor in how we get to these two towns.

Lastly, I have read about a Green Grotto on the Amalfi Coast. We are going to Capri however I don't believe we will have enough time to see the Blue Grotto. Where on the Amalfi Coast is the less famous Green Grotto? How accessable is it and is it worth seeing?

Thanks!

Ravello is wonderful. There are two stunning villas to visit and a small, but beautiful cathedral. We got there by bus from Amalfi. Not sure about getting there from Maiori, but you could always go to Amalfi and bus from there. Be sure to eat at Trattoria Cumpa' Cosimo. We visited Positano by boat from Amalfi. IMHO not very interesting. Perhaps it's a nice place to stay; but as a day trip, all you see is souvenir shops and over-priced clothing boutiques. The emerald grotto (between A and P) is the quintessential tourist trap. You pay a fare for the boat to get there. But, surprise! When you reach the mouth of the grotto, you have to pay an additional fee to go in. Inside, indeed, the light is greenish. The guide points his light at various rock formations which have slight resemblances to figures (if your imagination is good). The highlight is a manger scene with, I kid you not, plastic dolls representing the holy family. My advice is to save your money on that one.

Hello Wally...
Ravello and Positano are gems. Ravello is one of my favorites sincerely.
Maiori has local buses SITA and they are not as regular as normally, but they will run to Amalfi mainly and then to Positano and Ravello.

Also, the Green grotto you say is called the Emerald Grotto...nothing to the standards of the Blue Grotto in Capri, but still something to do, daily trips form Amalfi (weather permitting). It is a 25-min boat ride to the grotto on a motor boat and then you change to a smaller one.

I can give you further details regarding the ticket and etc. Let me know dates and where you will stay.

Thanks,
Cinthya

Maiori is a main stop - popular with Italians for the large beach and boardwalk-type promenade...no problem catching frequent busses to Amalfi (buy tickets at the tabacchi - I've never had a problem finding them in Maiori...the bus stops right across from the beach and there's a shop right there - you'll see it) They are now only sellling daily passes on the busses anyway (unless you are a resident of the Provinces of Naples or Salerno)which is a real bummer!) - so you have it for the day and it doesn't matter if you change busses in Amalfi to go up to Ravello, back down to Amalfi, and then on to Positano :-)(you can do both in a few hours easily)
