Mail From Italy

Anyone know how long it takes to get a package to the US at the least amount of postage? I picked up some items in Venice and mailed it home from Florence on 5/15, but the package has not yet arrived. I did not send it overnight but followed Rick's advice to send things home by "slow boat". Now I'm wondering if the boat may have sunk in the process. There is no tracking number that I can find on the receipt. Is 30 days or longer a reasonable amount of time? The box was about 18" square. Thanks.

I can't speak for Italy, but I've sent ebay items from Canada to Germany via surface mail and had it take 5 weeks.

You say this was a box. Did you fill in the green customs declaration sticker? Was there anything inside which might require US customs duties to be paid? Either could result in the US customs delaying it.
I can't comment on the time, it takes ~1 week to get across Europe, and neither the Italian or US postal services are famed for their speed, so 4 weeks is possible.

Having sent smaller packages to Italy in the past, I think a month is optimistic (assuming you filled out the Customs sticker)

The Italian postal service is legendary for its slowness. “Slow boat” will be very slow indeed.

Assuming it really is traveling by surface mail (no longer an option if mailing from the US to Italy), it may sit in Italy for quite some time until the sea container is filled. Not a lot of people use surface mail these days

I ordered something from England and used the lowest price shipping. It took a month to get to my home. So you could be waiting for another couple weeks.

An experiment.
Place package on glacier.
Place another with the Italian postal system.

Place bets on first arrival of package. I think it is even money.

We sent some "things" home from Sicily last year. Even via FedEx, it took over 60 days.

All I can say is that we mailed several postcards from Italy last year and they arrived well after we did...like, a month after we got home! lol. I think there is still time to hope they are on the way.

Not from Italy, but my brother-in-law bought a coo-coo clock in Germany and it took a couple months for it to arrive.

I had a shop ship a package from Venice and it was 6 weeks or so before it arrived.

"Panic" season opens August 1st.
