Madrid to Florence or Pisa?

Original thought was to fly Madrid to Florence but flights to Pisa significantly less expensive. Is it worth flying to Pisa then taking train to Florence? If so, should we plan to spend a least a few hours in Pisa since we are there? We only have 8 nights total for Florence, CT, and Rome.

Sure, why not stop in Pisa at least to see the tower? The airport is close to Pisa Centrale, where you can store your bags for a while and take a bus (or walk about 45 min) to the Field of Miracles and the tower etc. Many people visit Pisa as a day trip from Florence to do this, anyway, so you'd be saving one way.

On the other hand, if headed to the Cinque Terre and ending in Rome(?), I might instead want to head straight for the CT from the Pisa airport instead of going right to Florence. But, I don't know your itinerary.

Thank you for quick reply. Indeed we don't have set itinerary. So fly Madrid to Pisa then train to CT then train back to Florence then train to Rome? It only occurred to me to visit CT between Florence and Rome to break up the "museum" pace of touring. And how many nights would you suggest for each? If there is a better way to navigate this forum please let me know, I hate to add redundant questions.

This is how I would do it in 8 nights:
Fly Madrid to Pisa. Take the airport tram to Pisa Train Station
http://www.pisa-airport.com/en/the-passengers/transport/people-mover.html
At Pisa Train Station store your bag in the lockers there.
Tour Pisa for a couple of hours (I did Pisa as a day trip from Monterosso in 2016)
Take train Pisa to town of your choice along the Cinque Terre
(Monterosso has the most lodging stock of the 5 towns).
2 nights Cinque Terre based at Monterosso.
Train to Florence
3 nights Florence
Train to Rome
3 nights in Rome
