Madrid, Spain and nearby towns and cities

Hello,

My wife and I watched one of Rick's shows on our PBS channel in Milwaukee and it explored the region around Madrid. For some reason Madrid did not look all that great but the area and towns within not too far driving distance looked great. I could be completely wrong about Madrid and I hope that I am. If anyone has taken this "Rick Approved Trip" would you please let me know what you think about it and any tips plus suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have never been to Spain so any advice about the travel days needed and specific stops would be great. Last year we followed Rick's format of Slovenia and Croatia and it was a fantastic experience. It could not have been more fun. Well I guess it could have been if we would have gone further south to Split and beyond. Unfortunately we ran out of time.

Thanks

Actually Madrid is fantastic, but it doesn't change the fact you posted on the Italy forum.

Toledo and Segovia are a couple of places near Madrid that are fairly easy to get to by public transportation. Toledo is a 30 minute Train ride and you could easily spend a couple of nights there to explore. Segovia is about an hour north of Madrid and has a Roman aqueduct as one of it's main features. You can also explore the valley of the Fallen and El Escorial as a day trip from Madrid.

As for Madrid, I guess it depends on what you like to do. There are a number of museums there and the royal Palace is really nice as well. The main historical area of Madrid is easily walkable as well. I really enjoyed my time in Madrid.
