Lyon to Umbria

Hello, travellers

I am looking for some planning help please. Our last stop in France is Lyon before heading to Umbria for a week of R&R. Where are we best to fly/train into - where it would be easy to uplift a rental car, i.e. avoiding large cities! We would like to spend a week in Umbria in the country, so would require a car for undertaking day trips to other towns and sightseeing. So far I have booked the last 3 nights in Orvieto prior to heading to Rome. I still have another 3-4 nights to find a nice agriturismo somewhere in Umbria/Tuscany, preferably where we could do some cooking classes. I am not bothered particularly where, but we like small villages with markets, wine, food, etc, rather than big cities. Or maybe we just extend our Orvieto accommodation for the full time?

Our final destination will be Rome for our flight back to New Zealand. Rentals seem to be a bit of a problem area from what I have looked at online, but I am sure some of you will have some great tips. Any help gratefully received. Megan

You can fly on EasyJet.com from Lyon's airport to Rome--very inexpensive.. Make sure everyone travels light however.

It only takes 70 minutes to get up to Orvieto by a local train from Rome Termini. The Hertz office is across the parking lot from the train station.

There are plenty of hilltowns around Umbria to visit. And they've also got the fabulous Civita de Bagnoregio just south of Orvieto. It's quite a sight.

There are many sources of rooms, farm stays and B&B's around Umbria. See Booking.com or Agriturisimo.com. You can also pull up places to stay on Google Maps--clicking on the hotel square.
