Driving from Rome airport to Radda in Chianti on a Saturday, late morning - about a 3 hour drive.
Can anyone please recommend a small town and/or restaurant along the way that may be right off the highway where we can stop for lunch?
I'm not familiar with this area at all. Many thanks.
John
We liked Dopolavoro La Foce which is right along your route.
I wouldn't get off and on the A1 freeway for that.
There are plenty of Autogrill (a restaurant chain) at the rest areas (area di servizio).
Be aware that Italian freeways have controlled entrances. You need to pick up a ticket when you enter and pay toll at the freeway exit. There is no need to get off the highway for any needs. The 'service areas' have everything (fuel, stores, restaurants, and even hotels).
You may not make it on time for lunch at La Foce, suggested by Laurel, if you leave the airport late in the morning. La Foce is not exactly along the highway to Radda, it would be a detour and it's at least 2.5 hours from the Rome airport.
Thanks to both of you...I agree with Roberto and will stop on the autostrada.
How about Orvieto? Very charming hilltop town right on the way.
While I agree that Orvieto is a charming city, I don't think of it as a convenient stop for lunch while traveling. One would have to park the car in the lower town by the train station/funicular, take the funicular up to the top, then either catch a bus or have a decent walk into the town, then reverse the process to leave. If the OP wanted to spend a few hours seeing Orvieto that's one thing, (and time well spent) but I wouldn't consider it "right off the highway."
